Christmas shopping normally starts in early november and finshes in january when the sales are on.

It begins when you want it to begin and up to Christmas Day.
For retail it starts on Black Friday. Usually the day after Thanksgiving- though some stores began on Thanksgiving Day this year and ends usually Christmas Eve.

It officially begins on the friday after thanksgiving (known as "Black Friday") and ENDS on December 26th (the biggest "returns" day of the shopping season).
As extra points, mention that "Cyber Monday" is the Monday AFTER "Black Friday"--where people are back to work from the thanksgiving weekend AND they start hitting websites, doing xmas shopping while they are supposed to be WORKING!

Usually right after thanksgiving all the way up to december 25.
But the smart thing to do is get everything you need as fast as you can. Don't go last minute cause everythings gone by then.
