In computers, a server can be seen as a very high-spec computer, compared to a PC which is a low spec.
Servers typically 'serve' the business computing environment, hosting Files, databases, ftp, email services, web services, web hosting, and can have different operating systems eg. WIndows server 2003, HP-Unix, Novell.
Servers also have special hardware to help keep them up and running, including Scsi RAID, multilple processors, multiple power sockets, Hot-swappable hard drives etc.
