Norton used to suck. They were one of the worst available.
However, Norton has made quite the turn around, especially in recent years. It's 2007 Internet Security Suite won awards and lots of plaudits.
I've always been partial to McAfee. F-prot is pretty good. Kaspersky is another top rated one.
You can read some of the review in PC magazines and at www.tomshardware.com

According to the comparison site above Norton is currently performing better.
Norton gets a lot of bad press but I used one of it's recent releases pre installed on a new laptop. I thought it did a good job and is easy to use.
I've read that it is a resource hog but with a modern machine I wouldn't have thought this would have been an issue.
It wasn't with my 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo laptop.
I've never used McAfee.
You can get good protection for free using a combination of products but if you want a simple set and forget all in one then Norton will do the job.
Avira AntiVir Premium will do a better one, you may not have heard of it but have a look at the scores. I use it and it's excellent.

Good luck.

I Would say mcafee as norton takes up a lot of valuable resources and does slow your computer down .
Either way they both are good antivirus protectors .
But the best one i use is avg free edition it is very good and does not take up hardly any valuable resources .

I use avast! which is a free product if you are using it in the home.
Norton slowed 2 computers down to the point of not working and McAfee is just a litle better. Don't buy either - your computer will be faster for your decision.
