For all Employees Who Work with Rude Customers
An award should go to the Virgin Airlines gate attendant in Sydney some
months ago for being smart and funny, while making her point, when
confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo.
A crowded Virgin flight was cancelled after Virgin's 767s had been
withdrawn from service. A single attendant was re-booking a long line of
inconvenienced travellers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way
to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, "I HAVE
to be on this flight and it HAS to be FIRST CLASS".
The attendant replied, "I'm sorry, sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but
I've got to help these people first, and I'm sure we'll be able to work
something out."
The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the
passengers behind him could hear, "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I
AM?"
Without hesitating, the attendant smiled and grabbed her public address
microphone:
"May I have your attention please, may I have your attention please," she
began - her voice heard clearly throughout the terminal. "We have a
passenger here at Gate 14 WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If
anyone can help him find his identity, please come to Gate 14."
With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at
the Virgin attendant, gritted his teeth and said, "F... You!"
Without flinching, she smiled and said, "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to
get in line for that too”

I retired from 32 years in the travel industry. This story actually is true but it was United Airlines -- back in the early 90's....

But it is a funny story and could apply to any airline. Nothing is more annoying or obnoxious than a self-important executive who thinks his needs are primary. Trust me on this....I handled these jerks (male and female) for many years. There is an old adage that says "don't ever pi** off your travel agent for that agent can make your travel life miserable". Same applies to a gate agent...if you are nasty, your luggage may go to Siberia when you are going to Buffalo... Your desirable window seat will suddenly become the center seat in the next to last row.... Your eligible free upgrade will suddenly be "not available".

Decency, respect and a reasonable tone of voice can work wonders with your agent, the gate agent, and the baggage handlers.

What a quick witted woman. Good for her. By all means give her a medal.
Don't we all wish we could come up with the right words at the right time instead of standing there tongue tied?
Only once was I able to find the right words at the right time. I was working the service desk at a grocery store and could not cash a woman's check. She wasn't on file. She said, "What the F are you here for." I smiled and said, "To sell groceries."

I work with the public every day and wish I could do something as clever as her. I would get fired however.
