Rumors have been swirling lately about a possible trade between the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning that would include Martin St. Louis for Marty Turco and either Trevor Daley or Mike Ribero. Severall sources (TSN being one) have stated that conversations have taken place.

Who would get the better of this deal? Is it a smart move by the Lightning? The Stars?

I think Dallas is getting more for their money, but Tampa Bay is getting a better deal. I say this because goal tending it the only problem with the Lightning and putting a goalie like Turco on a team like Tampa Bay guarantees at least a playoff spot if not more. St. Louis is a great player but the Lightning already have Lecavalier, Richards, and Prosbal so I'd say they come out the overall winners.

Hey LITY... if a deal with Tampa doesn't happen, is there any chance Dallas will straight-up give the Pens Marty Turco if we return Darryl Sydor to them?? LOL.

I'll miss often playing against St. Louis and Lecavalier together... or even just St. Louis, if this deal went through..........

NOT. Do this before the Pens play the Bolts next month! Maybe we'll beat them for once!! WOOO!!!!

I really would like to see Marty Turco come to the East though. Love the guy. Even though I think it's safe to say Brodeur > Turco, it'd be cool to see them face-off more often!

Anyway, wow, Vinny's going to take this hard, isn't he? He'll be sitting around somewhere, having a Vinny & Marty montage play in his head set to "Don't Stop Believing". LOL.

Sounds good for both teams- 288, actually Smith has been as good as, if not better than Turco over the last 2 years. Also, why is Smith not ready, he's been a back-up for 2 years and is 25 years old. Plus, Turco is a notorious play-off choke, he is 184-88 in the regular season and 11-18 in the play-offs- That is right, only 11 wins. I can see the reasoning for Dallas and for TB. Seems like a good trade for both sides. I would say the other piece would be Daley, not Ribeiro because TB also needs another Dman.

Also, it works out close money wise. TB would be taking on about another million in salary.

This trade rumor is one that actually makes sense for both teams. The lack of offense in Dallas is glaring, while the lack of a top six defenseman and solid goaltending in Tampa is equally noticable. Mike Smith can easily step in and fill Marty Turco's shoes in Dallas (with Tobias Stephan serving as a capable back-up), while Trevor Daley can pair with Dan Boyle (when he returns) to form a potent defensive pairing in front of Turco.

In short, it would be a smart move for both teams...if only MSL can lift his no-trade clause.

BOth teams would benefit.
- Armstrong had been casually trying to move Turco since last year's all-star break. Since Hull took over, that has heated up (the entire Dallas management team believes Smith is the real deal)
- Tampa needs a Turco quality goaltender
- Tampa will gain more in defence then they will lose in offense
- Dallas would gain more on offense then they would lose in defense

Lecavalier is not going to fall off the face of the earth if St. Louis is dealt.

This is one of those deals that 'on paper' is a win-win for both sides. Each team dealing from strength to allay a weakness.

tampa would benefit by having a goaltender that would more reliable than their current ones, dallas would benefit by adding a proven scorer, st louis does have a no trade clause though and does like playing with lecavalier. mike smith may not be ready to take over the starting job just yet and it may be too much of a risk to trade turco

The Bolts would get the better end. Who are the Stars going to have for goaltending after? Smith? He's not ready to be a starter yet and this looks like something Ferguson would do. Hull and his co-GM (can't remember the name) is going to make a rookie mistake if they pull the trigger on this deal.

Personally, if I were the Stars, I would've asked for St. Louis and Holmqvist for Turco and Ribeiro and maybe ask for a third round pick for my fourth round (just to make it fun). Obviously, Holmqvist isn't up there with Turco, but he's good enough to keep showing Smith the ropes.

Bob, I don't know, man. From the times that I have seen Smith play, he wasn't that good. How long does Holmqvist have left on his contract anyways? If it's under two years, they can let him go (or trade him for a pick at the deadline) while still building up Smith's game.

this is a tough one to call because on paper it looks like a pretty even trade but you can't go off just that. if ribero were to be a part of the package then i'd say tb would get the better deal, but as of late my faith in turco has been a little shaken and smith looks like he is ready to step up. either way i'd be sad to see turco go.

Hmmm.... interesting. I don't think Turco has been playing up to his level lately. I would much rather keep St. Louis. If you do trade him; do it for a better goalie (Kipper maybe? Keenan isn't reall keen on him). I think the Stars would get the advantage here. The Bolts don't need this trade.

Dallas would get the better deal. However, Turco probably won't play as well anywhere else than he does with the Stars. Dallas is his home.
