Funny question...
It is not possible for America to "lay in ashes."
Critics, insurgents, rebels, and enemies (LIKE YOU) have been predicting the demise of the USA since 1776. Yet "We the people..." and all it stands for continue to lead the Free World.
Since you politely asked the question, though, America cannot be lain in ashes, either.
How sad, tragic, and predictable that the free education of America has produced a backwards intellect such as yours.
America's 10 best years of History still lie ahead.
As for you, I encourage you to learn Chinese, Russian, or Arabic so you can speak with your fellow colleagues more naturally.

I'm 73. And for me, not the decade, but say the 15 yrs. from 1940-1955, were this country's most glorious "epoch".
During WW II, it came together in a united way, such as was never seen before, nor since.
The war took a terrible toll, both in life and treasure; but the national effort it took to win a global conflict such that it was, engendered this nation's "spiritual evolutionary" zenith.
Following the war, it reached its cultural and economic zenith, evolving into the "fabulous fifties".
In my perception - and its only mine: call me an "ole foggy" if you want - beginning with the Korean Conflict, a sort of what(?) "spiritual cancer" seems to have metastasized into our very being, resulting in what we are today: a "violent and greed-ridden" society.
A very sad ending, to a once glorious, the greatest nation ever to have existed on this planet.

If it were to lay in ashes now, I don't think anyone would give a dame. cause the last 10 years , have not exactly made it a wonderful place to live in. Need I say it.
Gulf war,
Afghanistan War
Iraq war,
mishandling of it's own internal problems etc.
Like they say, one rotten apple in the barrel, spoils all the other apples.

maybe the 50s or the 70s were a happy decade. people had enough money / there were more families / good clean fun to be had. less stress. jobs plentiful. foreclosures were a rarity. credit card debt / student loans were not out of control. doctors / medicines were reasonable . most families had a big car and gas was not out of sight. moms could afford to stay home with kids. for the most part the country was at peace.
