Certainly if they wrote or owned the rights to the song, but guess what? they didn't write the song and they don't own the music rights, so they should be paying royalties.

i thought the song came from an american musical myself, it was covered by gerry and the pacemakers in the sixties and adopted by liverpool fans after that.
it's not owned by the reds at all and we certainly sang the song at the valley forty-odd years ago.
