OK My bf wants to travel to cuba next summer he even has family there and we want to visit. But how do u travel here? I keep hearing that Americans can't go (he's cuban-american)
I already know u can't fly from the U.S., and you can't get your passport stamped, smoeone said you have to use cash only, and i've heard American's aren't supposed to be there unless its a misson trip or you're int he military (is all this true?) so how can you travel there without worrying about something happening? What can and can't you do?? give me some info.

IF he is cuban american and has relatives over there he only has to have the Tressure permit that can be requested, he needs to relate there who is he visiting , their address and Identity card number, his Passport # , if he was born in Cuba he will probably need to request a cuban passport to the Cuban interest section in Washington , I mean if he has all that ... he can travel directly to Cuba from Miami, there are charter flights... is doable...requires work but doable...bellow is the link to the permit request , but my advise is to apply for it once all paperwork and passport is done and ready as this permit expires 180 days after being approved...not 6 months but 180 days ... mine almost expires, I arrived in here the day before it would kaput....good luck , if you have more questions let me knw... I did all the paperwork this year to travel and visit my family over there I am also cuban american.. good luck

Come to Canada. Book your Cuba holiday through a travel agency here. Change your US money to Canadian funds. Once in Cuba change your Canadian funds to Convertible Cuban Pesos. One peso to the dollar or very close. You need a passport only for ID. You will be given a tourist visa with instructions. Your passport will not be stamped. Do not bring anything back home like cigars or Cuban rum.

I have met people in Havana that were from New York. This is how they went about having a fantastic holiday in Cuba.

Interesting question as I was just looking into this myself.

As noted in other answers, it is illegal for American citizens to go to Cuba and to spend money there. THe way to Cuba is through Canada. Canada has loosened their relationship with Cuba a long time ago. I'm sure you could go there without the government coming down on you.

However, it is still illegal to bring any Cuban items back into theh country and this the border people will enforce.

What I have read about Cuba sounds very nice and I also would like to visit.

Maybe we should talk.....;)

You are speaking of your bf being Cuban American....but which nationality does he has ?
If he is born in the US and has the US nationality , he can apply for a license to travel to Cuba ...check this http://www.treas.gov
If your bf is born in Cuba , he will be treated as a Cuban as Cuba does not accept dual Nationality. In this case he has to do all the required paper work to enter Cuba. He has to go to the Cuban Interest section in the US. I think it's in the Swiss embassy.

Your bf can visit his family. There are provisions for US citizens to go. They deal with that all the time and many Americans go on a regular basis to visit their family members. Apparently there are flights going into Cuba (Havana) daily. You can come through Canada as well.
But I'm sure that someone living in Cuba will answer this question for you. They have a couple of sites they already gave to someone regarding this same info.
I don't know the sites offhand, but I'm sure they'll have it for you....

American citizens cannot legally travel to Cuba. You could fly there from Canada but that is still illegal and may get you into trouble.
