I've never understood the point of nationalism. We are born where we are by chance there is no reason to celebrate specifically. Showing your child love and pride for humanity is far more important.

I agree with the first two answerers; I will not be instilling any nationalism into any child of mine. For starters, my wife is a legal resident from Sri Lanka, and if we have kids they will have a bit of an international upbringing, at least culturally. I believe an international perspective will also help them avoid seeing the world in black-and-white, and that humanity is more important than the tribes and nations we artificially separate ourselves into.

If there is anything resembling nationalism that I would be instilling in my kids, it is the principles this nation was founded upon: freedom of religion (including the right to have no religion), free speech & the other civil liberties in our Bill of Rights, free market economics, a healthy distrust of gov't & politicians, a good work ethic and spirit of entrepreneurship, etc. I most certainly will NOT teach my kids anything resembling blind adherence, loyalty to the gov't, or "my country right or wrong."

I will teach my kids the difference between nationalism and true patriotism. I will teach them that governments either intentionally or unintentionally often do not act in the best interests of their citizens. And I will teach them that love of country is not the same as loyalty to its gov't.

I would never do that any more than I would force a religion on my children. I have always tried to provide them with information and encourage them to seek more. It is up to them to decide how they feel and what they believe.

I think to some degree, nationalism, is overrated. It is driven by arrogance, typically.

very insightful question. i donot think as a parent you alone can inculcate in your child felling of love and pride for your nation. i think it will be shaped by the society, peer circle, media, parents and most importantly your child him/her self.
