TiVo can be connected to the Internet using a phone line, or wired or wireless broadband Internet connection. Anything beyond basic operation (what TiVo calls "broadband-enabled features") is unavailable via phone line. Out of the box, older TiVos ran older software that wasn't broadband-enabled until the Guided Setup step where they connected to TiVo headquarters and updated themselves to the broadband-ready version. This is why old Web sites stated that you needed a landline at first. This is no longer the case. I set up 2 TiVos at a neighbour's house this week, and both were broadband-ready out of the box - no landline needed, ever.

The cheapest way to set up and operate your TiVo is via a wired connection - just run a network (Ethernet) cable from your router to the back of the TiVo.

If you prefer a wireless connection, you can plug a number of USB wireless adapters into your TiVo. However, security is crucial with wireless networks, and TiVo's own adapter is the only one that supports WPA encryption when used with a TiVo. All other brands force you to downgrade your entire wireless network to WEP, which is not secure at all, when used with a TiVo.

In addition, the TiVo-brand adapter has its own processor to offload some network tasks from the TiVo, making transfers 60% faster on average than with other adapters. This is important if you perform demanding operations like downloading movies from Amazon Unboxed, or streaming shows from your living room TiVo to your bedroom TiVo.

Finally, TiVo's 3rd-party compatibility depends on the brand, model *and revision* - it's hard to ensure you're buying the *specific* item that will run on your TiVo.

For all these reasons, the TiVo-brand wireless adapter is the best way to set up and use your TiVo without a landline.
