I have a Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener.. Recently, it stopped working. When pushing the button, it sounds like it trying to open, but it doesn't do anything. After that, it starts making a clicking noise and blinking, 10 times, I believe.

The garage door has no sensors, it never has, and we've had it for many years.

Does anybody know what could be wrong with it? How to fix it? Anything?

Thanks!

hi Sounds like the string that hangs down to catch the chain is not engaged, sometimes this comes disconnected. If you push the button and the chain moves but doesn't catch then pull that rope with the little plastic handle and then push the button. Is it a chain drive or belt driven? If you hit the button and the chain doesn't move then the chain somehow came off the gear. Make sure someone didnt slide the channel locks of the garage door in by accident. if this is not it, the round plastic gear is broke, this happened to me, I had to buy a 7.00 kit and replace the gear. look on top of the unit where the chain connects and see if it is broken or cracked. good luck

Hi -

Chances are it's a screw gear or a chain drive that may have a guide or sprocket broken. Now a days the garage door openers are fairly inexpensive; about $150.00 and up. The new ones come with sensors. Instead of diagnosing what the problem is, you can put a new one in with the warranty for much less worry.

Hope this helps

It could be a variety of things. A professional service call may cost you almost as much as a new one. If a klutz like me can install one (with the help of a friendly neighbor) you can too.

I think it may be illegal for a professional to install a unit without sensors, and all units come with them. As a pediatrician (now retired) I have seen serious garage door accidents, and strongly urge you to put your anti-sensor bias aside, especially if you have children, grandchildren or tots running around the neighborhood.

sounds like the gears are stripped out of it. they are simple to fix, and not very expensive. if the chain is hanging low it might also be a sprocket. no need to replace opener if you dont want too. Just be warned, because you do not have eyes on it, in some states its illegal for a professional dealer to work on it.

First properly adjust those Torsion springs, you should be able to lift that door up and down with a couple fingers when those torsions are properly adjusted. Second, there is a knob on that opener that adjusts for "pressure" , that is resistance pressure, should the door hit an object, crank that knob clockwise to adjust down force. Third, there are distance switches that stop the door on down and stop it on up Those need adjusting Fourth, that remote needs to be programmed to suit the opener setting. The two need to be set accordingly My son works at Sears and he suggests you go down there and talk to someone about that opener so that you will understand the adjujstments necessary. and pick up a manual on your door.

Sounds just like mine. I opened the unit and found that the nylon gear which operates the door was missing most of its teeth.
