Hi! If you don't have high blood pressure or glaucoma or diabetes, you should be able to safely use Sudafed (or any decongestant that says on its label that all it contains is pseudoephedrine), as long as you don't use it for longer than the package label recommends (I'm saying this because I made that mistake and it caused serious problems for me!). That will really relieve your congestion and will NOT make you sleepy. It's just not a good idea to take it right before bed since it can keep you awake....take your sleep-inducing cold medicines then! The ingredient in these cold medicines that is making you sleepy is the antihistamine. If you have a runny nose it would probably be good to take an antihistamine as well as a decongestant, but I'd buy one separately - loratadine (the active ingredient in Claritin) - NOT Benadryl or other ones. The antihistamines that usually are contained in cold medicines are the ones that make you sleepy.
If you are into alternative medicine, and your cold just started, you could try andrographis - also known as Kan Jang (?). You can buy it at a vitamin store or maybe a health-food shop. I bought some but haven't tried it yet and I hope it's safe - you might want to research it more - but I've heard rave reviews about how it makes you get over your cold faster, if you take it at the start of a cold. The symptoms may be worse temporarily at first, but the virus will be short-lived.

Tylenol Cold & Sinus has both day and night formulas and work quite well, imo. Advil Cold works well too. The other one I would suggest is Dayquil. Hope you feel better soon!

Sudafed day is great as it does not make you drowsy at all but will dry you up sufficiently.
