Hee! It will be a torture ONLY if you'll be making the diet for slimming, look better or to please someone else...If you'll make the diet for YOURSELF-- then believe me that it won't be a torture.
Also I wanted to tell you that diets aren't "I won't eat the main dinner- I'll stay hungry for today!" or "I'll better go out and smoke rather than staying home eating"- You'll just be running away and TORTURING yourself. A diet is a question of balancing your lifestyle.. Balancing the foods with the physical exercise. Personally I don't believe in diets that concentrate only on foods and drinks-- without physical exercise a diet isn't balanced at all!
>>I want to finish by telling you that a diet won't be a torture unless it becomes a state accepted my your mind!!<<

Cheney is not the kind of politician to let the facts get in the way of his opinions, in fact he's a liar - many UK and US intel experts have said so and indeed our own experiences of World War 2 and Korea also point to torture being entirely counter productive. If you do get some 'facts' they cannot be distinguished from 'created confessions', and certainly not quickly, so they tend to be of little, if any, use. However the use of torture is totally counter productive to winning hearts and minds! The problem with torture is that most people will say absolutely anything you want them to... it is not and never has been the case that someone confesses and then the torture ends. So you get self contradicting 'intelligence' and outright fantasies which cannot be differentiated from facts - in other words of no great use. So it is not only illegal and morally repugnant - it is also proven to be counter productive! Who used the harshest and least discriminating tactics in World War 2... and who lost? And if winning hearts and minds is THE STRATEGIC objective in defeating terrorism, I'd like to hear ANY proponent of torture explaining how torture achieves that!! People who support torture are deviants who need locking up (preferably with a large and particularly nasty cell mate!). EDIT Interestingly there are a number of posters here who seem to sound ex-Forces... what a shame they seem to know NOT a thing about winning hearts and minds (no surprise that they are completely politically naive?). Apparently they are gullible to whatever 'us and them' argument some bigoted, morally bankrupt politician like Cheney has to say. Well winning hearts and minds means keeping the moral high ground... I haven't seen much evidence of either from the USA and surprise, surprise, the US hasn't exactly been in 'mission accomplished mode' in Iraq or Afghanistan in nearly a decade... I can't see either campaign ending soon, despite Cheney's torture tactics, can you?! The reputation of the US is lower than dirt right now and the friends it had after 9/11 were all lost after 9/11 - because of the actions of Cheney and his pals. As a nation it is as morally bankrupt as the old USSR ever was... does that encourage anyone to give the US information freely? I very much doubt it, try to help and you may get tortured! So no, he's wrong and if he'd read The art of war by Niccolo Machiavelli (yes, there are more than one art of war books) he'd have known that privatising military personnel for reward will lead to a loss of discipline... !

From the dictionary.
Diet (nutrition), the sum of the food consumed by an organism or group.
Diet has resolved into a means of gaining pity and showing a way to destroy another of Gods creation.
Do you drive two miles to the jim then DO ten miles on the walking machine?
Enjoy your food, savour every piece you consume.
If you believe you will get fat -- *******--

Diet in a bad sense of the word is 4 letters. But in a good sense (such as eating right, nutritious, not skipping breakfast etcc) is not torture.
People think that going on diet is the answer to losing weight. Wrong. Portion control is. Eating too much than what you body needs (taking exercising calorie requirements also into the calculation) leads to overweight. The word 'DIET" is a 4-letter word here of course.
Rule of thumb for dieters: Your palm is your measuring cup. Your main course on your plate cannot be any bigger than your palm.

No, diets are a way of saying I want to look a little skinnier. Starving yourself is def a way to say I wan to tortute myself.
I personally dont like the entire "I am in a strick diet". Whenever I think I have gained a few pounds, I just cut down on candies, bread and rice. That just does the trick. People who are constantly dieting, need to change their entire way of eating period.

In my opinion diets are a way of torturing one's self, but a lot of times it has totally healthy results and reasons behind it.

I wouldn't say torture.. but maybe test my limits. It's for a good cause with a good outcome though, to make yourself look and feel better. Kind of like when I think about when I am going to quit smoking soon. Of course it's not fun, but it'll pay off in the end.

You know what? It's interesting, because during the time period leading up to the diet, the person was probably not caring at all about their diet... and then I do think afterwards there is that feeling of wanting to punish oneself - but it depends, because some people really don't want to diet but the doctor told them they have to just to save their lives.
In any case, my mom always told me it's easier to just develop good habits and eat moderately from the beginning, so that one doesn't have to resort to all that self-denial and self-punishment later on. ok, hope this helped.
