You are right about this. In general this is the case because the less fortunate are much less likely to take things for granted than the more fortunate ones are and are thus more thankful in general. And you're also right, there are fortunate ones who ARE very thankful just as there are unfortunate ones who complain a lot but, in general, the less fortunate are happy just to have something to eat and drink and someone to talk to. :-)

Sometime people who have always had things don't understand what it's like to NOT have things, so they take them for granted and aren't grateful. Sometimes folks without things are grateful for anything that will advance them up the ladder to more comfort. HOWEVER, there are a raft of people who are not well off and don't have things simply because they are waiting for other folks to give them to them because they feel like everyone else is just "lucky" and should give up things simply because they have them and others don't or because 100 or 1,000 years ago their ancestors were abused and so everyone else should pay that back regardless of the fact they weren't even born then. There are also a raft of people who have things that share willingly and widely. That's how charities get the majority of their money and volunteers to help out, that's how schools get computers and 3rd world countries get much of the technology to lift them out of the mud, ignorance and disease. And let's not forget the people didn't have much, worked very hard for a long time, and now have tons. People like Bill Gates (to name just one of several hundred). Take a look at the amount of money, software, computers, etc that those people give to those that have not much and to "3rd world" countries.

Men and women of fortune are less empathetic, because they think all problems can be solved through hard work and money, not ever knowing what it was like to get off the ground without money to begin with, or to not have the same abilities as they had.

Yes the answers to your question sound all spot on.
But it also has to do with up bringing, how you were brought up.Also too many people think about thereselves to much and are sellfish to an extent.
I have been to Asia and seen the very poor and there living conditions. The scruffy looking children with empty bellies and snotty noses begging. It breaks your heart to see,but what can you do to help,if you give them money it encourages them to do more and sometimes they give money to there beggar master. It is all down to people thinking of there own well being and not others,to many sellfish people and greedy.

Well in my opinion it's because the less fortunate do not take things for granted, place more value mentally and emotionally on things.
If like me they probably live each day as it comes and are grateful for the little things.
