Will it differ from car to car?
Mine is a 95 Honda Civic with a hand brake.

yes it only stops the rear wheels

The E brake is for using, when stopped on inclines. (It is primarily used when at a full stop and to keep the vehicle from rolling) It may be used if your brakes fail and you have the time and remember to put it on.(slowly) On most cars it will lock the rear brakes, on some it is set up to lock the drive shaft. You should know, what it locks up before you use it. You need to be careful about the weather, when using it. They can freeze on if the temp. is below freezing.

It differs. Some use rear brake, others the drive shaft!

Only works on the back brakes!!! Don't even think about using it to drive, far too dangerous!!!
