I'm 57. I read mainly science fiction / fantasy, and mystery / thriller. I read approximately one book every day. The stories change from book to book. Occasionally, I read short stories, and I find that I am liking the short stories better the older I get ...
I am also a 'part time professional writer' and I have been published, but never in the 'fiction' section. The 'point' I'm trying to make to you is that if you want to become a writer, you need to do the kind of writing that YOU like to read, not the one that wins in this poll. Believe me when I say that if YOU like to read it, there are enough others out there who also will like reading it, and it is MUCH EASIER to write the things YOU LIKE TO READ than to work from a 'poll' ... so turn on Y!A and sit down at your word processor and start to write ... try 'free writing' at first (just write whatever comes out your fingers on the keyboard) and then print it out and go to your 'reading place' to read and edit it ... and GOOD LUCK in whatever you want to write about. If you want to take a good look at 'excellent writing' by a person you would think knew NOTHING about what he's writing about, read everything written by Andrew M. Greeley. The man is a Catholic priest and a professor of sociology. He writes books on religion, books about women, books about sociolgy, he writes romances, mysteries, science fiction, and fantasy. EVERYTHING he writes is really about one thing, though ... about our relationship with GOD. He writes excellent books, no matter the genre ... and if you can 'get it' then what you write should at least 'approach' his 'mastery of the written word.'

I'm 13. I usually enjoy fictional stories with people my age, something that I can relate to. But not the stories about some girl chasing another guy, or something cheesy. I also like fantasy, historical fiction, or adventure. I usually enjoy books that are exciting and make me want to read more, and the end of the book is satisfying, hopefully a happy ending.

I'm 14
I'd liked to read books that pretty much just follow someone throughout the course of their life. Kind of like a diary but not in that form.

Stephen Coonts third unwritten book "Saucer, The Mothership"
What will happen I do not want to know until I will hopefully read it IF it is ever written and published.
Clive Cussler is also my favorite author for years

In my twenties :)
I enjoy books where people triumph against an oppressive society and also form close personal relationships with each other, and achieve some deeper understanding of themselves.

Young African American Lady; I like reading books that are mostly based on truth and my culture/heritage. I like when they deal with issues/problems that I would actually go through.
