Historians now believe that Jesus was most likely born in the springtime. Dec. 25th was chosen as the date, however, because at that time they believe the winter solstice was on that date. we now now its dec 21/22, but that date signifies the time in the year when from the on, the days get longer thus more light, which was what Christians belive Jesus does in our lives.

No, but then the Queen wasn't born on 16th June either. Since about the year 400 (AD) Christians have celebrated the birth of Jesus, because it signalled a very exciting time for the world. The sad thing is that, in the West, Christmas has largely become a non-religious holiday and more children believe in Santa Claus than in Jesus. I think the song writer was right when he wrote the words "Christmas isn't Christmas till it has happened in your heart!"

Winter is the true reason for the season. The Jesus birthday myth of Dec 25th was copied from the legend of Mithra.

THE DATE:
The feast of Mary...the annunciation is assigned to March 25.
Nine months later would be the obvious choice for the birth of Christ.

"The opinion that the Incarnation also took place on that date is found in the pseudo-Cyprianic work "De Pascha Computus", c. 240. It argues that the coming of Our Lord and His death must have coincided with the creation and fall of Adam. And since the world was created in spring, the Saviour was also conceived and died shortly after the equinox of spring. Similar fanciful calculations are found in the early and later Middle Ages, and to them, no doubt, the dates of the feast of the Annunciation and of Christmas owe their origin"

The argument that Christmas was set at Dec. 25th to counter pagan celebrations, would not hold up because in the 4th century the "Roman gods" were no longer being patronized.

The date of Christmas varied greatly among different groups. The second link gives a number of explanations

THE PURPOSE:
I believe the two-fold purpose of God himself becoming flesh in order to 1) reconcile people to himself. (Why death on a cross was the way he chose, is one of the questions I am going to put to him when we have a face-to-face one day. ) and 2) to give hope to people through his resurrection, that we too are facing in death, not a blank wall, but a doorway.
