It was read on the radio during this year. The boy was possibly a Jewish refugee. He meets up with various people who help him including a painter. I thought it was called "my name is David " but I can't find it under that title.

It was called "I Am David" - Amazon has it here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/I-Am-David-World-Mammoth/dp/0749701366/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1197193048&sr=8-1

"North To Freedom" looks like an alternative title - maybe in the US? Certainly I read it under the title "I Am David".
