I haven't had my first baby yet, but I can tell you about my moms labor with me. Her water did not break, she did not lose her mucus plug, she just went straight to contractions. SHe barely lost her mucus plug and her water finally broke once she started pushing me out (which was 17 hours later from when her contractions started) at 37 weeks.
Oh and the first baby you have will not always be late. My mom had my sister right on her due date (when the doctor said my mom would go over due with her), and she was only in labor for three hours. Thats with the 45 minute drive to the hospital.
I noticed when my baby dropped by not having anymore heartburn, I can breathe again, his kicks are lower, barely above my belly button, instead of in my ribcage (he's head down already), I can actually eat now, I have had a lot of pressure in my pelvis, my inner thighs are sore, and my pelvic bone is sore. I couldn't really tell just by looking, but everyone keeps telling me he's very low, but I still can't see it. Goodluck and congrats

Well i never knew when either of my babies dropped, they recon you will be able to breathe better and wont have so many kicks under your ribs but that certainly wasnt the case for me! :) With my 1st baby, I went in to labour naturally a day after she was due and after about 12 hours of contractions I lost my mucus plug. My waters never went so after 30+ hours of contractions the midwives broke them for me. With my 2nd baby I had to be induced at 38 weeks and the contractions, again, came first then after a couple of hours I lost my mucus plug and, like before, they had to break my waters.
I'm not sure if some women do actually know when their baby has dropped (apart from pushing fingers into belly either side of it neck, thats what a midwife showed me and I could feel babys neck and shoulders - well weird!) but i know I couldnt tell for sure when they dropped, but everyone is different. Your doc/midwife should be able to tell you when baby has dropped. All the best!

I'm in the same boat as you are. I havent dilated, havent lost the plug or water breaking and I'll be 39 weeks 2morrow.
A few people says I have dropped but I dont feel it or see it myself. All I can say is it will happen when it happens. I saw the doctor Thursday and he said even tho my due date is the 18th I might be having a Christmas Day baby with the way I'm going. So you never know...Everything could happen at the last mintue... So just be patient and good luck to you

my sister lost her mucous plug 2 weeks before, had true contractions for 36 hours, then her water broke in the hospital.
It all depends on the person, but only10 percent of women have their water break first.

Nothing happened for me like it was "supposed" to, but it all went smoothly. With my first I woke up a week before my EDD when my water broke and an hour or so later had back labor. She was born exactly 6 hours after my water breaking. I always heard the first was usually born late and after a long labor! I am now 8 weeks pregnant with my second.

well you'll know when the baby drops because you all of a sudden can barely walk! i had contractions first, then when i got to the hospital i lost my mucous plug, then the nurse broke my waters for me because it wasnt happening by itself. i had a natural birth, no drugs, and from the start of my contractions, to the time my baby was born, it took 12 hours. she was 2 days overdue, and weighed 8lbs 2oz. good luck! x

I'm 39 weeks prego and same thing. dr said my mucous plug has thinned and baby is head down, but from the looks of the belly doesn't look like he has dropped. I don't remember mucous plug "thinning" dr said it is a gradual process and just looks like discharge. I've had no false or real contractions. have no idea. feel free to write me directly at kellie@lola.ws to compare notes since we are similar in our due dates :)

If this is your 1st baby, then that is normal.
No m.p., no water breaking,etc.
Usually, contractions start, slow & steady at first.
During the course of labor, your water may break on its own, you will lose your mucous plug.
Everyone is different... I wish you would have taken a childbirth class. Go to the library & get a book about pregnancy/ labor.
here is a link to get you started.
