hi.. this is an (imaginary numbers) question..

i = imaginary number

find a and b ?

i know that both both sides equal each other but i don't know whats my first step.. please help thanx!!

Answers: a = 5, b = 1

The error is the second b should be -b
First step is to note that if
a+b + i(a-b) = 6 + 4i Then
a+b = 6 AND a-b = 4
Adding the two equations yields:
2a = 10 -> a = 5
Subbing into the first equation
5 + b = 6 -> b = 1
Solving yields a=5 and b=1 as required

a + b + i(a + b) = 6 + 4i

Equating real part on both the sides we get -
a + b = 6 ....................... (1)

Again equating imaginary part we get -
a + b = 4

This question is absurd. But if the question is -

a + b + i(a - b) = 6 + 4i
Then -

a +b = 6..............and
a - b = 4...........

If we solve these simultaneous eqns, we get -

a = 5 and b = 1 .................... Answer

This doesn't work. I'll explain why so bear with me:

If this were true, the real part on each side would have to equal each other. That means:
a + b = 6

Also, the imaginary part has to equal each other. That means:
a + b = 4

That's an impossible situation, so there is no solution. Are you sure you have all the signs right? If this indeed is the problem, there is no solution.

equate real parts with real parts and imaginary parts with imaginary parts:

a+b = 6
a+b = 4

oops. are you sure one of them isn't a minus b? the answer you give confirms the problem should be

a+b + i(a-b) = 6+4i

so we would have
a+b = 6
a-b = 4

add these together to get
2a=10, thus a=5, substitute 5 back in one of the equations and solve for b
5+b=6, thus b=6-5=1

Two complex numbers are equal only if the real parts are equal AND the imaginary parts are equal
This can only be true if
a + b = 6 AND
a + b = 4
This is NOT possible because 6 does not equal 4 EVER

then you are supposed to solve this by simultaneous equations. I think there's an error in the question.

Well this is impossible

To ,do this, we would need the following to be true

a+b=6, and a+b=4

If we try to solve we get

6-a=b

a+(6-a)=4

a+6-a=4

6 = 4

The above is a fallacy, so the situation you gave is impossible.
