Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are great games, I suggest buying Kingdom Hearts 1 first though. Oh, and also play the game that fills the gap between Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 titled Chain of Memories for the Gameboy Advanced.

Well, Final Fantasy is a turn-based RPG, and Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG, so I'll recommend some of each.
Turn-based RPGs:

Star Ocean - Till the End of Time
Rogue Galaxy
