It happens. The same as some folks without a degree, or sometimes without a high school education become millionaires. Of course, the odds tilt in your favor to make more money when you have a higher education.
The old adage "Find something you love and do it to the best of your ability, and the money will come." rings true usually. Talk to as many people as you can in the field(s) you are interested in and see what they recommend. Nothing better that using someone else's experiences rather than having to suffer through your own.

I have a BA and although I am not working now, due to family situation, I lived paycheck to paycheck. The mistake I made was that I got a degree in a field I wasn't cut out for. My advice is to go with something you love anyway. Having a degree is a plus but make it in something that you love. I love art and had initially wanted to enter that field but I was afraid it would be hard to find a related job nearby. I wish now I had gone into it anyway.

I don't know anybody with a B.A. who has gotten a job that a High School graduate wouldn't qualify for, and it's no small handful of people. If you want to get anything from college, you need a Bachelors of Science or something along those lines. Forget liberal arts... all it will get you is a debt of about $100,000 and years wasted in college that you could otherwise have been getting on-the-job experience... and making money.
I'm a High School graduate with a 3.0 average and make more money than almost every college graduate I know. One of them got her BA in Philosophy at Northwestern University near Chicago -- not an easy school to get into. Her career: she started off working in the library at a local community college. Now she's working the customer service desk at a Borders book store.
