Oprah is supporting Barack Obama publicly for several reasons; but none of them deal with race. In fact, it actually has more to do with gender.

The first reason why Oprah is publicly supporting Obama, the first political endorsement of her career, is as a few of you have already said: she genuinely approves of Obama and wants change. Obama offers this.

The second reason why she is publicly backing him is to counter Hillary's strong appeal to women. Her M.O. is to use her widespread popularity and likability among women to swing the January 3rd caucus in Obama's favor.

Oprah will soon be heading to the "Hawkeye State" to help his campaign, as well. She needs to make an impact on what the polls have recently shown: a 50/50 split of the support of women between HRC and Obama. You may be wondering why.

It's simple: to win the nation, Obama needs to win Iowa. With the vote of a majority of the women, he may be able to do just that. Heck, maybe it'll even cause a ripple effect.

Yes, it is a long shot, but it might be able to work.

I believe she is supporting him because she's finally found a candidate that she can believe in. Not the usual politico and someone who may be able to actually effect some change in Washington. It may be a long shot that this could actually happen but other than Kucinich, who is really scary, Obama may be our best bet. At least he is intelligent and literate, with strong integrity. He is willing to use diplomacy rather than weapons first. Oprah knows him and finally there is a woman who is not fooled by Hillary's "I'm one of the girls willing to take on the boys", routine.

If she had endorsed Hillary, would skeptics say she did it because it was a woman-for-woman thing?

If she had endorsed Huckabee, would skeptics say she did it because she likes Hillbillies?

Contrary to popular belief, Oprah has a right to support whatever candidate she wants...just like we do.

If "we" vote for anyone EXCEPT for Obama, is it because we want to vote for a white person only?

Maybe the question should be: Do you believe "we" are not endorsing Obama mainly because he is black?

No, not at all. For one thing, the two attend the same church in Chicago where they both have a home. Whether she has endorsed another candidate or not doesn't suggest that she is doing it because he is black.
I believe that she thinks he is the best for the job. It's a risky thing for high profile public figures to endorse candidates.

If any non-white celebrity or public figure endorses Obama they will also be labeled in the same manner. I highly doubt Oprah and Obama got together one night, held up their fists and said "let's do this for OUR people" or any thing else along those lines.

I think it has to due with similar beliefs about many issues. I think Oprah and Obama are both too smart to base an allegiance only on race.

Race has nothing to do with it. This is the first time in a very long time that a candidate has risen to this level without special interest control. His freshness appeals to those that have seen enough of old party politics. Naturally the fact that Hillary is so objectionable has something to do with it.

Yes, definitely. They want to show that a black person can govern... but history have shown otherwise.
