All the research I've done says that it is actually very safe to have a home birth as long as you've had a problem free pregnancy. I haven't had one yet as I'm only 19 weeks with my first, but I've already discussed it with my midwife & at 36 weeks they'll come & do a home check & review my pregnancy to make sure it's as safe as possible. My friend had her first at home & she was so much more relaxed than if she'd been in hospital that the baby was born in only 4 hours & the midwife only arrived 20 minutes before! She didn't have to go into the hospital afterwards, at least not until her 6 week check. For more information & stories about other women's experience, I found www.homebirth.org.uk very helpful (I'm in the UK so if you're US, maybe there's a similar site based there), as well as a book called Birth Your Way by Sheila Kitzinger.
Wherever you decide to give birth...good luck!

Hi there, well congrats on the impending little one. I tried to have a home birth with my first daughter we were fine thundering along, I was fully dilated after 30 mins & we were in the last leg I suppose you could say, they had me push for what felt like hours until they put their heads together to figure what was wrong. It was actually me who told them there was something horribly wrong & demanded that I be taken to hospital, once I got there they had to push my baby back up the birth canal & then give me an emergency caesarian. The next day I was visited by my consultant who explained just what had happened it was something called Bondles ring, it means that rather than your body working to push the baby out it seals itself around the baby so no amount of pushing does any good! Apparently it's not even something Midwives in training learn in detail because it's such a rare condition. Then again about a year later I shelled my second daughter like a pea!!!! So I can see how you are torn between hospital & home & no if your labour & birth goes well there is no reason why you should go to hospital, I think you should also speak to your midwife about this because they don't have to agree to do it for you, then in which case you need to hire a midwife which is quite costly. I have to say that I really enjoyed being at home there are no ward routines to remember, you can eat when you want, sleep when you want & if you want to be left alone you don't have to answer the front door. You also have to remember that home birth can't be too bad otherwise mankind wouldn't have survived pre NHS. Ultimately the choice is up to you don't take what happened to me as the norm it's very, very rare & the majority of home births go swimmingly. Provided your pregnancy is normal & you have good support I see no reason why you shouldn't try to have a home birth of your own!

Best wishes & good luck xox

I disagree with Pedsgurl. The hospitals here in Indiana will not allow natural childbirth. They insist upon the electronic monitor and they will not let you eat. Most doctors do a routine episiotomy. They will not admit you if you insist upon natural childbirth.
I had three at the birth center and one in the car. A few of my friends have had a home birth. They got along fine. Read a lot and be well informed. Some goods books are, Childbirth Without Fear and Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way. I used the Bradley method with all four of mine.

Home birthing is extremely dangerous. Yes, I understand that many women did this before having babies in hospitals was started. Still, what would you if something went wrong? Even if you have had a previous delivery that went well or your pregnancy has been normal, there are so many unforeseeable things that could go wrong. Not to mention what could go wrong with you...what if you need a c-section ? You may not have time to get to the hospital to save your baby...what if you have bleeding issues and don't have time to get to a hospital....You never know what COULD happen. While we all hope for an uneventful pregnancy, why chance it when you have hospitals?

There are so many " birthing suit" hospitals which feel cozy and you don't have to have medical intervention, but being IN the hospital can be a life saver, literally.

Its illegal in our state to have a home birth, or else I would have gone that direction.

If you live close to the hospital theres very little risk, you need a midwife there obviously.

The midwife can do your stitches if you need any, and make sure you're set to be home, generally in a few days you'll go in for a check up, and then a 6 week check up after as well.

A close friend of mine has 7 children, the last three were delivered at home by her husband. She refuses to go to the hospital anymore. She's actually delivered a few of her friends babies as well.

Birth is natural, and we're made to do it. Before there were hospitals women always gave birth at home. Its less stressful and makes things easier.

Some people are not meant to give birth at home, so talk to your doctor about it- or to your midwife.

You can find your answer at www.don't have your baby at home.com
With so many potential problems of having a child, why would you risk your baby's life and your own? There's a reason the % rate of babies dying during birth was so high back in the day! Go to a hospital so your newlittle guy(or gal) has every chance he or she can have.

i don't know anyone who gave birth at home because most people go to hospital where it is better and safer. because at birth you don't know what kind of problems you might facing so at hospital where they are more qualified and can help you and the baby.
