Spybot search and destroy and Ad-aware used to be great, but they are certainly no longer the best. I have also found they have become quite bloated.
My favourites are now SUPERAntiSpyware, A-Squared free and the older versions of ewido.
If you want/need real-time protection, then Windows Defender, Spybot or Spyware terminator are really the only free ones, unless you don't mind paying out.

In regards, I wouldn't offer these links unless you said
that are free, free is not reliable as commericial [except Comodo Pro], there is no best, as there is some that is great while others miss, each have different amounts of updates..

Compares a small handful
And yes bitDefender is an AV but is not free, i've done personal research, as far I can say Webroot Spysweeper + ThreatFire + Comodo Firewall PRO V3 + BitDefender 2008 or Pro or Panda or NOD32 or Kaspersky would be a great combination/ or Counterspy instead of "Spysweeper", however you ask for free spyware/malware detectors, which I clearly indicated below.
Any combination is great.

Spybot Search and Destroy is pretty good if used in combination with Adaware SE, both of which are free.
AVG is also another good (and free) Anti-virus program and has its own spyware program also.
Running all of these on your machine will slow performance so I would start with the first two. If you wind up with specific viruses, trojans, malware on your computer these might not do the job. In that event you need to do some research on your specific symptoms and precede from there.

The best are CounterSpy, SpySweeper and Spyware Doctor, but the best isn't free. Some decent free ones are SUPERAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware, and Spybot.

Unfortunately none of the free stuff is anywhere near good. I've tried them all, and on two occasions I was forced to reload my Windows XP to get rid of a virus that could not be eliminated by the freeware I had installed. I bought Bit Defender which is guaranteed the best on the market. I've used it for almost a year, and nothing, but NOTHING has got past it. I regard this system as money well spent. Try it, and I guarantee you will not be sorry - there is a try before buy period. www.bitdefender.com

Spybot is probably the most aggressive next to Hijack This. I find the the combination of Spybot and Adaware will rid you of just about all malware.
Adaware

No antivirus or antispyware protection is perfect but a good mixture of the two will help you clean your system and hopefully keep it clean.
I have listed a few antivirus, anti spyware and firewall applications that are available for download and are completely free: I will not get involved with the rights and wrongs of each package or its effectiveness or indeed the “This is best” or “This is crap” statements. Whatever you do, just make sure you have one of each type installed, updated and fully working:
