They are great if you do not have to have hands-on most of the time. You have to be very self-motivated and make sure you work on it at least three days a week.
I started a web -based course just recently. It was real hard for me because I barely know how to use the computer. I am learnig how to use the computer while I go to class.. There are many times I wish that I could talk to a real live person. Well, they have someone you can talk to most of the time. There is usually even a 24 hr help line. It has been real hard for me but I am going to stick it out. They do work with you and try and help you a lot. I like it because I can wait until everyone has gone to bed and do mine. I like to get up early when everyone is sleeping and work also. Actually early mornings are my best time.
You can take your school work where ever you go. If you do not have a computer you can usually use the library one. It is definitely best to have your own computer or one you can use when ever you want.
Just think, with gas prices and traffic etc. you can just stay at home and go to school! I really like that part. You get to chat with the other students also. In fact that is a requirement with my home computer school.
If you do it, stick with it and you will be rewarded greatly. They just picked up 60 credits for me from school I went to 35 years ago!! I did not even know I had all those credits!!

To be honest, I would say the most valuable part of a college education is the contact you make (networking). Many jobs/opportunities come along because who you know, a sad reality about the world. Also you will be able to be more engaged in your classes when you get to hear others questions. Further, you get all of your senses involved actually being in a classroom, rather than your eyes, which makes the learning part easier and more fun in my opinion. I guess the disadvantages are that online classes are cheaper, and sometimes easier, depends on what your looking for really.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but if you're asking about the impact of cruising on the local ports and communities they visit, then I would say it's varied. Of course there are lots of jobs created, which is a good thing, but there can also be a good bit of pollution caused as well. It's a trade off, and there is always tension between the cruise lines, the local companies that support them, and the local activist groups that wish they would go away.

I take them and I like them for the most part.
Advantages:
Don't have to get dressed to go to school.
You don't have to worry about what others in your class think of you or your outfit.
Can do things at your own pace (for the most part).
Disadvantages:
Don't have the teacher right there pointing everything out.
Easier to cheat.

A lot of pros, very few cons.
Pros:
Study at your own pace - after the kids are put to bed, after work, or whatever. Study any time, any day.
No traffic to fight.
No weather to fight.
Study stark naked if you like and still interact with your classmates and your prof over the web.
Same prestige and same weight as the in-campus study.
Cons:
No direct, face to face interaction with people. No university experience. It is a life of its own and you miss that opportunity.
Common to both:
Price is the same. Books are the same. Library resources are same.
I will vote for online education. It is the best way.

I took one and the pros are that you can do it all in your own home without walking out the door. The cons are you have no face to face interaction with teacher and fellow students. But, depending on the course, sometimes that isn't important. I liked the course I took and the fact it was all available to me in my home and I didn't even have to get dressed or waste gas!

Personally I love them. Can choose when you want to study in the comfort of your own home. I've done a few, and its worked for me, but need to be sure you get online tutor support for any queries. All depends on your individual learning style I guess.
