Whirpool seems to hold up pretty well, that is what I use.

Whirlpool and Bosch are going to be the highest rated overall, but it does really depend what type of Washer and Dryer you are looking for.

Whirlpool top loaders (traditional style) are great, but you have to spend a pretty penny to get a stainless steel tub in the washer, which is going to be gentler on your clothes over time. With the money you'd spend for that, you're better off going with a little bit less expensive front loading set, such as the Duet Sport - WFW8400, WED8400.

Bosch machines are front loaders, but they cannot be stacked and are not recommended if you have living space below the laundry room. They are heavy and vibrate a lot, and that could cause problems.

Remember when looking at the machines that Kenmore is just Sears rebranding models made by other manufacturers (such as Whirlpool, Frigidaire, etc.). Also, Whirlpool owns/makes Roper, Amana, and Maytag machines as well, so there will be a lot of similarities, and often a slight price drop to go with a Maytag over a Whirlpool.

If you go with a front load model you will be saving water. A traditional top load uses 45-60 gallons of water per load, whereas with a front load it is closer to 20-25 gallons per load. This doesn't just translate to saving water, you're also heating far less water, and using less detergent. They also spin much faster, allowing you to use your dryer less, which saves energy. Stainless steel tubs are better on your clothes, and not having an agitator will also be better on your clothes (and your sheets won't twist as much!)

A lot depends on how may "bells and whistles" you want, and if you want top or front load on the washer. If you just want a good, basic washer and dryer, with few extra features (that you won't use anyway), I'd recommend the Kenmore. Good parts availability, durable, good performance. We had one set that lasted about 20 years - through three children. They all use a lot more plastic now;so that will be an issue in the future.

Good luck!

For washing machines.....For better performance and efficiency:

• Whirlpool Cabrio HE WTW6600S[W] , $1000
• Bosch Nexxt 500 Series WFMC3301UC , $1100
• Whirlpool Duet HT GHW9400P[W] , $1200
• LG WM0642H[W] , $1000

Best overall dryers at a reasonable price:

• Kenmore (Sears) Elite 6697[2] , $570, CR Best Buy

This dryer scored excellent overall and cost hundreds less than most other models near the top of the Ratings. It does lack some frills, such as custom programming, a stainless-steel drum, and a reversible door. Its door is drop-down style.
Nearly as good for less:

• Kenmore (Sears) Elite 6692[2] , $500, CR Best Buy
• GE Profile DPSE810EG[WT] , $550

The Kenmore scored a notch lower for drying than the Kenmore (Sears) Elite 6697[2] did, but it offers ample capacity and a moisture sensor and is relatively quiet. It lacks custom programs, a stainless-steel drum, and electronic controls. It also dried delicates more than we would have liked. The GE provides excellent drying performance overall and can handle big loads. It has a moisture sensor, stainless-steel drum, rotary controls, end-of-cycle signal, and a drying rack. This is a noisy machine, a consideration if you place it near living areas.

See the Consumers magazine in the library. I just bought a w & d and got the Estate models. Very inexpensive with a decent rating. The salesman said given the price, you get lots of bang for your buck. So far, he's right.
