I sell computers for a living. My store doesn't carry Macs.
Now that I got that out of the way, Get yourself a Mac. I love my macbook. There is nothing you cannot do with a Mac. They cost more, but I think they are built better. The keyboard is a little funky though. It took me a while to get used to it. The magnetic powercord release is also freakin brilliant. I have seen more people come in to get their computers fixed because they got pulled down from some surface. The mag release just pops off and leaves the computer intact. The interface is rather easy to get the hang of. Safari is more than capable of most internet browsing. Installing applications is really easy.
There is another feature that sealed the deal for me though:
Bootcamp!
Bootcamp allows me to reboot my laptop from OSX into Windows XP. (Stay away from vista.. its pretty awful)
But yeah look at the link in my sources if you aren't convinced.

Macs have come a long way since their days of being confined to the crummy software isle of the computer store.
Still, application and game support for the Mac is not universal, and those that do often port it to Mac at a later time. There are more programs written only for the Windows operating system than there are for Mac's OS X.
Earlier versions of Windows (even XP) occassionally encounter Blue Screens of Death as a result of driver issues. If you really want, you could go with Windows Vista, which puts the drivers outsides of the main OS so it won't destabilize the system if one of them misbehaves.
I would recommend a OS X based system (like a Mac) for beginner computer users as the environment tends to be more guided and controlled. It's like riding on a subway... whereas for intermediate users, Windows offers more flexibility and power. Sort of like driving your own card... Expert users generally prefer a Linux distribution as their operating system as it allows them full and total control over their system... akin to working on your own car.
But buying a Mac is not really recommended. You pay an added premium for buying a Mac computer than you would if you were to buy a regular PC and load the OS X (Mac) operating system on it. Or you could build your own computer selecting the parts you want in your system and assemble them yourself at great savings.
However, if you have sufficient knowledge for that, you'd probably find yourself prefering Windows anyways.
Generally speaking, Windows-based PCs occupy 95% of the business world, with stubborn holdouts in the graphics and entertainment industries. You can feel free to have a Mac at home, but understand that out in the business world, you'll be forced to work on a windows workstation almost exclusively.

You will never regret switching to a Mac. I have experience with all kinds of computers and I have only owned Mac's in my home.
Some great reasons to get one; less chance of hacking or viruses, a very well made and designed product and great tech support. What more could you want?
