I'm trying to transfer some 1100 honeymoon pictures from CD to a new external hard drive. I've already transfered thousands of pics from my pc's hard drive to the external without issue, however when I try to copy them from the CD, it will copy most of them but then an error message pops up saying "can not copy DSCF0019: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". If I stop and restart the copying after that picture it will go fine again, until it hits another one. Any ideas?

Try cleaning the disc with a dry soft cloth.
Probably a data error, can be dust, or CAN be a physical fault on the file.

If you have access to another machine, try copying the file on another PC.

Failing that I hope you haven't deleted from memory card as yet !

Naz, NICE technical quote, but USELESS in that it doesn't actually answer the question

It sounds like the CD-ROM drive is having a hard time with the CD. It's either a physical issue, or an interface issue. First, make sure the CD is clean with no scratches. Then try copying the files over in batches...like 20 at a time. Or try copying them to the computer's internal hard drive first, then transfer to the external.

A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is a type of function that takes as input a data stream of any length and produces as output a value of a certain fixed size. The term CRC is often used to denote either the function or the function's output. A CRC can be used in the same way as a checksum to detect accidental alteration of data during transmission or storage. CRCs are popular because they are simple to implement in binary hardware, are easy to analyze mathematically, and are particularly good at detecting common errors caused by noise in transmission channels. The CRC was invented by W. Wesley Peterson, and published in his 1961 paper.
