Like Halsey said, everyone's opinion is different. Personally I always hated commercials. I never liked he idea of selling a product especially if I didn't like it or use it myself. I also hated that they were generally more like cattle calls than a tv or film audition was. They'd call in way more actors than a tv or film call would because the type would be less specific and your resume didn't matter as much.

On the other side of that, the pay potential could be much bigger depending on if it was a national, regional, or (ugh) a buy out. And if it was foreign, no one here would see you being cheesy and selling some strange product :-)

For tv and film, there's a much clearer idea of character (in my mind anyway). There's more material and more time for you to show that character. Also as far as earning potential it depended on if you being called for a regular on a pilot, a recurring, an under 5, a bit part in a film, a supporting, a lead, etc.

So the answer to your question is, it's a matter of opinion.

It depends on you - I know a lot of people who act (including me) and we all have different opinions. It may also depend on who you are trying out for (is there a lot of competition - then it may be hard). TV commercials are better to start with to get your name in the business so when you try out for a movie you have experience. Personally I would try out for a commercial first (or try to get an agent if you don't have one!)
