What ever you do for your boss is a service.Similary OS provides service. These services include everything that is required of the system like, File Systems, Processing power, Memory,Networking, Devices like Cams,Cards etc etc and so on. Different operating systems have been popular for dfferent reasons. Unix is the Father of all operating systems as it was developed by people for their use.The it was used by others. Till date there are no comon home users of unix. Windows and Linux bring in the flavoours for home users where the GUI is made simple and relativly easy. The underlying functions remain the same. The Abstraction to the user is different.

an operating system is da one which provides a user interface between da system & outside world.os provides an user interface to(monitor,keyboard & other parts ) through drivers.This is why sometimes when you install a new printer or other piece of hardware, your system will ask you to install more software called a driver.
