Determined, to improve. Of course disappointment is sometimes unavoidable. But remember to try and enjoy the struggles in life while you can, for life is short as the saying goes.

i guess it depends on how you would feel if you had won,
would you think the reason was your skill level/effort, or would you think it was a combination of your skill, effort, timing and circumstances
would winning make you feel great, or would you feel better then others?
we humans are /seemed to be geared , to feel sad at a lose, and we analyze ourselves , sometimes this analyzing is useful, should i of studied/trained more, what was i lacking, did i need to develop more?
the main thing i think, is to consider this as a statement of how you did in that competition, not as a statement about you as a person, nor of your talents
all in all, i would say one should act with dignity, whether winning or losing, smile and act polite, dont make excuses , accept the reality of what has happened,
see if there is any information you can use , from the experience, to help you in the future
i once in college lost a poster making competition, i didnt get 1st, second or third, and there were only 4 entries, lol, i was shocked, i had thought my work was good, afterwards i realized i had not understood how the theme should be applied, nor was i really artistic by nature
and the odd thing was, i had only entered the competition to go on the expense paid trip, with my friends, where many competitions were occuring, and still if felt bad, i can only imagine what people feel who have invested alot into a situation,

Well... if you trained really hard for something and you didn't do well... it's normal to feel kind of bummed. If you half-azzed it in training and you didn't do well... well then you should kind of feel like you got what you got because you didn't give it your all. So basically... when you try hard and do your absolute best and you don't do as well as you hoped....it's normal to feel pretty bad. You gauge how you take your losses by how much effort you put into it.
As far as how you act... you gauge that on whats in your heart at the time. If you lose miserably after doing the best you can possibly do... and you cry and walk away...well okay, it's a blow to you. But if you can walk over to the winner and shake their hand and appreciate their work... kudos to you. Just do your best before, during and after and you will always be able to face the mirror.

However you want to feel.
If you feel pissed, don't act like you don't care just because you think other people will be bothered by it.
Life's spent caring about what other people think, but you're your own person and you should be able to be who you want to be.

With dignity. Especially, when you do NOT deserve to lose
