Will humankind survive religion?

Question

The "Universal Church" is accused of profound ignorance and systematically abusing its adherents for over one thousand years until some smart Englishman translated the Latin Bible into English, allowing the average Joe to read it for himself.
How can we allow this to happen?
Should we burn all intellectuals at the stake of savctimony?

I'm not sure how well civilization could ever have progressed, without some clever royalty instilling a built-in moral corrective into the brains of some very rebellious factions of their population. They pulled this off by employing, and aligning themselves with some recognized religious leaders to help them control these rebels.
However, most of Europe has now succeeded in weaning itself from religion, and now seems to be doing well enough.

So, I guess a moral code of some kind can be cultivated into the masses to the point that we don't require one cop to control one citizen.------Let's hope---( whoops, I almost said " pray" ).

I'm with the first guy.... it ought to read "will religion survive humankind."

Why shouldn't the bible be read by the average Joe? It was written by him.
