Exercise (it will help with your blood circulation) and take Evening Primrose Oil supplement (natural supplement for women). They will help with painful period. If it's really bad, try a hot compress and lie down flat on your back with both your legs elevated on 2 pillows (no pillow behind the head). Works for me.

If medication isn't your thing, try mild exercise. I have found that when my cramps are really bad, I get on the treadmill and go for a brisk walk. Don't get me wrong, it's a REAL effort sometimes to get off the couch and out from under the blanket, to get on the treadmill, but once you do, it's a world of difference. I have an exercise room that has the TV set up in front of the treadmill. I turn on a good show(usually the Food Network) and walk for about 20 minutes. It's not a cure-all, but it's healthy and can give you some relief.

I am not sure which country you are in but if you can get your hands on Naprogesic, these little magic blue pills are a lifesaver for me. Otherwise you need to take something specifically for period pain, headache tablets etc won't do the trick.

You can try a heating pad or hot water bottle as well as by trying to increase iron levels during that time by eating things like spinach, raisins, and peanut butter (if not allergic to peanuts of course).
Because of how severe these cramps are though, I would recommend seeing your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they think could be causing this.
