After losing ground with their struggles a persons tends to think that things will never get better. It is unfortunate but some people grow coarse and have a permanent scar in their personality. As a person that has had plenty of pain in my life I will tell you that the best response is to look beyond what is currently going on. Don't waste too much time looking back because memories can become distorted and very little good comes out of it.

I think that it's possible for people to forget how to BE happy, but I think we always know what happiness is, even if it is unreachable.

Also, for the most part, "happiness" is an effect of us achieving our goals. Our goals regularly shift and change, so what means "happiness" to us can also shift and change. If we find that one of our goals is unachievable, then it is a healthy tactic to shift to a different goal. In a way, you're forsaking your choice of happiness for a more achievable happiness.

In some cases, such as abandoning our dreams, this is bad. In other cases, like lowering our expectations due to an abrupt application of clue hammer, this is good.

Yes under bad circumstances it is. Happened to me. But remove yourself from the circumstances, sit back and ask yourself, who am I? What used to make ME happy before 'this' came along? You, just like me can be happy again. Even happier because you tasted unhappiness and will appreciate every single happy moment from now on. Do try it Hon.

Quite possible, when he/she is extremely happy, for instance! (That's on a lighter note!)

Also, on a more serious note, there can be various psychiatric conditions, when a person can forget what happiness is...as any qualified psychiatrist can explain, if required.
