Both 1 and 2 offer valid suggestions. Price certainly; but profit is driven by cost to produce as much as by greed. Then there is thickness/ type of lamination; or process in creating a finished product; Type of material used IE: HD and Lowes; for example sell a bead board, as well as other types of panel, that are MDF; either stamped or veneered. I'll just add my 2 cents.

I'm sad that there has to be degrees in any lumber; but certainly it allows for less waste, in using more of the substance of a tree, and relates to specific uses; IE: Plywood sheathing; versus veneer ply.

Wainscote panels are no different; although one can use many types of paneling; cap it with molding; and call it wainscote. I have beadboard half paneled walls in my LV room, with a cap, and it works fine for me. Plain Mahogany Luan would be as effective, and stains as nice as Birch Veneer Ply.

In some measure it also depends on the choice of the buyer, and the intended or assumed effect one wants to achieve. You may be very happy with Flat, but Knotty panels?
Or purchase a less expensive panel that will be painted over anyway.

I do have one opinion that others may disagree with. There are no degrees that fit the word QUALITY; in the strict sense.. Something is or isn't a quality product.

Trying to be fair here and say on the societal level, treatment of women in Mormon societies are not bad. It would be the individual man that would ever openly discriminate against women and cannot be directly blamed on the church. If you look at the national average of women's salaries compared to men's salaries. And you looked at Utah's average of women's salaries compared to men's salaries it is behind the curve. Now you also have to look at the average women in high level positions nationally vs Utah and see the difference. Now you should also take into account the amount of women that want to move into these high power positions. From answers from Mormon women here on Yahoo Answers they can testify to what they are taught about in church about where their priorities should be. They can testify that it isn't directed towards the workforce. So this peaks into religion. No women will ever hold any position the man holds. But that is similar in most religions so you can't point the finger at the religion for that. But that is only if you are comparing religions which we know we don't like to do. It is taught to women that after all is said and done. Judgment has been made in the afterlife and one final right of passage comes from the husband the woman was married to in the mortal life in the temple. They must have the husbands permission to be with them in the Celestial kingdom. What kind of message does this send to women? I was raised mormon and always respected women but have to think deep down and serious about the discrimination that is instilled. It is not evident on the surface but will show through in statistics and the attitudes of women in Mormon society vs a national average. I honestly believe women are as smart if not smarter than men on average. I believe women make better bosses than men. I'm not saying all women are good bosses or all men are bad bosses. I believe chess is a mans game due to the type of competition involved and women simply put their competitive side to other things they are more interested in, naturally. So you will always see men on an average better at chess than women. Not because men are smarter. It is just they care more about it. I am only mentioning the game chess to try and explain how I see some differences between men and women. Seriously bless all women. You are the fabric of what makes a society great. You keep society level headed and are always more trustworthy in making good rational decisions in times of need. Mormons can not be blamed alone for the suppression of women. But they have some things in their religion that direct women the wrong way from true equality.
