If it hasn't ever been used for an illegal purpose (adult porn isn't one of those purposes BTW). Put the hard drive back in. Go to the following link.
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
and download the Windows 98 SE OEM boot disk to the desktop, now insert a formatted floppy in the floppy drive and double click on the program for the Win 98SE OEM boot disk you just downloaded to the desktop. This will create a Win98SE bootdisk on the floppy disk. Close the program after creating the disk but do not remove the floppy from the drive.

On your keyboard...Hold CTRL+ALT w/ left hand, hit DELETE key twice w/ right hand... The computer will restart and should boot from floppy if set to do so in CMOS (if not you will need to enter CMOS Settings and set it to boot from floppy instead of CD...usually need to hit DELETE key upon start up to enter CMOS, but could be F10 or even F1 or F2). When it asks whether to allow use of CD player, it isn't necessary. Once at a DOS A:\ Prompt, type the following:
fdisk or FDISK and hit enter(it will look like A:\FDISK) and then will enter the fdisk utility.

In FDISK you need to choose to Re-Partition the drive by removing all partitions first, restart the computer and repeat, the process to arrive back at FDISK, set up a new primary partition, the reboot again, then type FORMAT C: then hit enter (at this point C:\Drive will Format the drive), restart again. (Low level formatting and writing zeroes and then another # and then zeroes again is considered a complete government wipe....Norton Wipe Info is a good program for this). Now your drive has been fairly wiped and ready for resale/recycling...unless of course it was used for some illegal purpose. In which case keep the drive out, take it to the FBI and turn yourself in....or simply take it apart, cut up the metal disks w/ tin snips into very small pcs, burn em in a fire, shred them even further, separate the pcs into many piles and sling them to the 4 corners of the earth.....But the FBI will still be able to recover data from the pcs if it wants to.

Just recycle the darned thing as there probably isnt much on there worth a darned or give it to me and I'll wipe it and find a good use for it. PS, the memory was cleaned after you shut off the computer unless there is a memory virus contained therein.

Good Luck.

the ram shouldn't retain any info on it after you shutdown and especially after you erase the hard drive. as for erasing the hard drive search on google for "darik's boot and nuke" it can erase anything on your hard drive to the point where even the government couldn't recover it. it will take a long time though possibly multiply days or as short as 7 or 8 hours
