If the colours are not contrasting, how can you differentiate between the stains?

i think the step is the decolourisation using acetone or alcohol.Because if it is not decolourised well then primary stain is not released properly which may result in confusion.
yes offcourse both the stains should be of contrasting colours. Only then differences in the positive and negative types can be identified very well.
