pure vegetable oil like rapeseed or sunflower seed oil can be used in deisel engines without convertion. Some people just throw in 20 litres of cooking oil when they fill the tank up. So stop off at tesco's buy £50 of food ( including 4 x 5 litre bottles of cooking oil) to get your five pence a litre off, then park at the back of the car park. pour them into your tank run round to the petrol station and fill up with deisel and get the five pence back on the rest..
Have you ever wondered why there are so many empty cooking oil cans by the recycling point....There is your answer...
Wouldn't like to try it though... My car has electronic injection system and the smallest amount of water would render it useless..
But if it were an old van or a vehicle with a mechanical fuel system it might be worth the risk..
Look at itisnteasybeinggreen website DICK STRAWBRIDGE
He shows you how to make proper alternative fuel from vegetable oil and it is water free..

Yes, as mentioned it should be clean. There many ways for this. Some people use two filters and a small start tank of Diesel and once it up and running switch to the vegetable oil. This just "one" way as some just make a diesel fuel and vegetable oil mix. It best to research this and decide what be best for you.

Yes any diesel will run on veg oil but it will need to be filtered and kept warm if you live in a cooler climate.

Yes as the others have already answered, but of course don't forget to pay the road fuel duty otherwise you will be in for a nasty surprise if you are stopped and dipped.

Its quite easy to tell if your car is running on it - it smells like a chip shop.
