The account details will be kept for years and the bank can get them back for you or the police or anyone who can get a court order like HM Customs

Your details will still be accessible through the banks archive system, they must hold that information on record for a set number of years (~5 years, but could be more, am not sure).

But the details will not be available on their "live" back office system, i.e. if you go into a branch and they try and look up the account number and sort code, it will not show them anything. Old account information will be limited to people authorised to look up archives.

Eventually the account number you had will be reissued as a new account.

Closing your bank account means that all balances or money from that account was withdrawn (zero balance). The Bank does not delete your account, it merely identifies in the system that your account is no longer available for any future transactions (i.e. deposits) thus, not accessible to anyone. When a bank account is closed it cannot be re-opened. Bank personnel who has access to the deposit system, can only inquire your transaction history but cannot edit any information . Clients (including you) cannot access the bank account details whether via phone, atm, or internet. And since there is no money in that account, no one will be interested to access you old account details... unless of course, if your being investigated for violating grave offenses like fraud, money laundering etc.

They are effectively deleted, but kept in archive for several years. Once the account is closed, it cannot be used. The bank also owes a duty of confidentiality to you, so it is unlikely that your details will be disclosed to third parties.

You can close your account any time, but you will need to pay off the amount you are in the overdraft when you do. Overdrafts of 1,000 to 1500 are not unusual if you have a continued history with that bank - any higher and you may have a problem.
