I have a Lennox whisper heat that is 12 years old. What it does is shut off during a call for heat and not come on until someone manually turns it off and back on via power switch or thermostat. It usually occurs overnight or when everyone is gone to school/work. As a result it gets really cold in my house. It did it again last night and the temp. outside was 13-15 degrees F. It was about 59 degrees F in my house this morning. This has been happening for 2 1/2 weeks now. I have a cold because of this. Can somebody please tell me what is wrong with this piece of crap?

The furnace control is locking out. There could be several causes. To start you should do the routine maintenance on it. It sounds like it may be an airflow problem or the conrol board. For a step by step troubleshooting guide, check out the furnace page at my source.

Before having that furnace repaired, make sure the tech has a snake camera to examine the heat exhanger. Any qualified tech knows where to look for cracks on those furnaces. If there is a crack found in the heat exchanger, time for a new furnace. Heat exchangers are not available anymore for whisperheat models due to them only being a 60% efficient design. The duracurve heat exchangers had a very bad history of cracking in the upper rear midsection of the curve. In the industry we call them "duracrack" exchangers. 9 out of 10 lennox whisperheats I find are all done. Once a heat exchanger has a crack or fracture in it, it has the possibility of emitting carbon dioxide as well as carbon monoxide. Not safe to operate. If the tech doesn't have a camera or is not willing to remove the air conditioning coil and look down on top of the heat exchanger, get another tech. You may be trying to repair a furnace that isn't worth repairing for safety reasons. As far as the problem goes, probably dirty flame sensor or the circuit board needs to be replaced. Knowing the heat exhanger issues with this furnace however, I'd be looking for a new one even though it is 12 years old. I've found cracks in 10 year old ones.

When was the last time you had it serviced by a qualified tech?

Edited to reply to your new comment:
So, the furnace is a "piece of crap" yet you don't know when it was last serviced?
Do yourself a favour.......get it serviced. It will then work reliably. Don't cheap out on something so important.

if your not a DIY, call a service man
