The heat in my Nissan Quest turns cooler if your foot isn't on the gas pedal or you're just idling (like at a red light or in heavy traffic). It's nice and warm otherwise. I've noticed on the temperature gauge when the needle is more in the middle of the 'normal' level, the air gets colder, but when it's down at the low end of the 'normal' area, it's fine. If it matters, the A/C works fine in the summer. I am too cold to keep this this way... any ideas on what it could be and/or how to fix it??

Have you had any work done on the car recently?
You may have a blockage in the heater lines.
If this vehicle has about 75000 miles on it.
You should probrably replace the thermostat and water pump along with a timing belt as a routine maintenance.
when this is done ask for a cooling system flush to eleminate any blockage in the heater core.
Oh and I agree check your coolant level first you may just have a simple leak such as a loose hose ect. You have to have a full cooling system to get heat.

cost total should be around 300-500 Max.

Hello Rachel, You did not mention what engine option you have in your Cougar: The 2.0L 4 cylinder or the 2.5L DOHC V-6 engine? (There are different things on each engine that will cause your problem) If yours has the 2.0L (4 cylinder) chances are the problem is a split PCV hose elbow. ADDED: @ keith p, Including yourself! There is no adjustment on this engine of ANY kind, the PCM (Powertrain control module) has full control of the entire engine! ADDED NOTE: The engine will still idle @ about 500-550 RPM with the IAC unplugged! This is how the minimum air rate is adjusted!

Do you have a control for an air circulation vent? My Camry has one where I can either recirculate the air inside the car or let outside air in. When I have the vent open to allow the outside air to get in, I noticed a difference in temperature so I close the vent. I think most cars have this feature so take a look and see what position it's in now and do the reverse.

Sounds like a lack of water/coolant in the system. If there's not enough coolant then it won't go around the heat exchanger radiator for the hot air. Also you may have an airlock.

It can depend on the temp. While you car is idling there is not nearly the same amount of cool air hitting the engine which cools it down. However while moving the more air hits the engine cooling it, but then since you are moving, your engine is turning more RPM's or working more producing more heat. The outside air temperature greatly affects how drastically your engine heat. But a majority of times your cars engine heat increases on idle and while not moving.

There are several things to check that you might not be able to do. coolant level and condition would be the first, radiator caps ability to hold pressure, most people and techs miss that,
the actual amount of coolant flow created by the water pump impeller, overall condition of belts and hoses. I'm not sure on your nissan if the water pump is internal, driven by timing chain,or external, driven by belt. I have replaced one on an Infinity v-6 that was chain driven but wasn't difficult.
water pump impeller loose on its shaft or a loose belt could cause the condition you described. also a cooling fan staying on could be the problem.
Good Luck.

check the antifreeze setting may be to high,
it should read below -25 deg, or more,
sounds like the water /mix is starting to freeze in the radiator,

You need to add some antifreeze coolant to your radiator system, Other wise, your heater will do that.
