Could be a circulation problem resulting in edema (settling of fluid in lower extremities). It could be a sign of a more serious problem. Head to a doctor as soon as possible, not necessarily the emergency room, but as soon as you can next week.

If he can press his thumb into the swelled place and it leaves a huge dent, it's edema. Which can be caused by a number of things, so he should probably be checked out, because as someone else said, it can be a sign. It can be blood pressure related (and even in pregnant women, excessive swelling of the ankles is a real problem).

I have had problems with swelling and edema because of orthopedic problems I have in the ankles and feet (elevation didn't help that much, either), and getting a pair of orthotics made really helped that a lot.

So have him check into it. Good luck!

Yes it can be serious. Blood clots from excessive inactivity can cause some dangerous repercussions. He needs to walk around the block at lunch hour and try to lose a little weight..

Icing the ankles and taking Ibuprofen every four hours should help. While keeping them elevated. Take a specific walk every evening or do it on the treadmill. Go for one mile, measure it my driving it. Take the walk together. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day . The walking and water help to flush the toxins out of our body.

Good Luck and Have a Blessed Holiday Season.

Hi Ann,

There are so many causes for swollen ankles.

Please see your doc.

The best thing is to get his blood tests and urine tests done at the earliest.
