Are they legitimate, or do they accept anyone, no matter how bad their poetry is?

There are many kinds:

Vanity publishers, like 'poetry.com', charge you a fee to be included in a collection.

Forums, like this or poemhunter.com, offer places to post your work and have discussion boards.

Self-publishing houses, like selfpublishing.com, help you assemble, print and sometimes distribute.

Freelance listings, like gofreelance.com, charge a monthly fee to send you job postings.

There's hundreds of places out there. Lots of them say "FREE" but are really not.

They are businesses. The don't really care about the quality. They want to get paid.

Only 2 so far...Acorn, accepts only Haiku.
And Avatar...they have a theme for every issue they publish. Haven't heard from them yet, but a friend of mine has and he was rejected.
So, I know for certain that these two are not 'fakes' or 'vanity'
things, which by all means...stay away from! And, they will NOT accept just anyone.

Like T.D. said...they prey on the 'vanity' of people who have an obsession with seeing their name in print, they want desperately to be published!

Go to...
poetrykit.org....this is a listing of publishing magazines and journals from all over the world...they will say if online submissions are acceptable. I usually go the snail mail route, and WAIT.

YES! Poet's Market is an excellent book! It has 1000+ journals, magazines, and contests! Some of the contests cost money, but 99% of the journals/magazines are free. You can also try googling "poetry submissions" and you'll get some results. But I would DEFINITELY recommend Poet's Market. It costs 30 bucks at major bookstores, but if you're serious about submitting poetry, it will be the best 30 bucks you'll ever spend. And all of the mags/journals listed are checked by them, and they're legit. There's tons of other info about publishing and getting your poetry out there, also! Please check it out!!
