If u come to my school, everyone is like emo, with emo hair, emo clothes, guys wearing girls' clothes and eyeliner...now its suddenly cool that people cut their arms and carve drawings and words on their wrists..i think thats kinda sick!
they all say they wanna be unique but its not unique anymore..i dont hate emos by the way, emo guys are still kinda hot but its too much

Welcome to junior high (or high school). When I was part of that hell, it was "alternative". Suddenly, everyone was "alternative" when Nevermind got big. All these followers thought they were sooo cool and affected and deep and original when they were all the same and being trendy was business as usual for them. You're the cool one if you stay true to yourself, no matter what that means. Good luck, I'm sorry you are living in that world.

It's because society nowadays values the underdog, and the underdog is essentially anyone whom society hates.
So Emos are essentially playing off of society's double-standards - whether they're aware of it or not isn't the problem.
The problem, as always with sub-cultures (yes, this includes alternative cultures and even the counter-culture) is that eventually every culture becomes a target for marketing.
This particular sub-culture, whilst quite remarkably humourous, is rather irritating in that it allows ordinary people to get away with being stupid little sh#ts.
That's my answer, btw - it enables people whom lack self-confidence in their intelligence to join a stereotype known for being emotionally superior, and therefore one cannot attack them for their intellectual short-comings because of the instant response of "Dude, why're you being so egotistical" or "Hey, if you don't want to talk about it in a civilised and constructive manner then i won't listen to you".
Passive resistance, i believe the term is called.

This is why school uniforms are so important. People don't have to worry about these things. I kinda glad I didn't have to go through this. I'm not one to follow trends anyway..well most of the time.

People are becoming "emo" because it is popular in Hollywood right now. People think that they must imitate the people in Hollywood in order "to look cool".

Because Generation (D)umb and Generation (S)tupid don't have enough intelligence to think for theirselves... they are the worst generations EVER in the U.S. and they WANT to look like the trash that they are.
