A centralized world gov't can't and won't exist ever.
People by their nature tend to love their country and their culture.
If a world gov't enacts a law that offends a group that group will raise up arms to keep it's culture alive and form their own country at the minimum. Other factors always also include people of like minds rallying together to fight the common norm. Such as the Germanic Tribes sacking Rome during the Roman Empire. People are too different worldwide to cast one government over them.

It's too powerful and therefore too open for abuse. However, if this government was centred on the right things; the good of the many rather than the good of the few then it may well be a good thing. However, I am unsure how that would come about - especially with countries such as the US so viciously opposed to socialism, wheras Europe is very much open to it.

It is a good idea if it is centered around the needs of people and society. It is a bad idea if it is centered around the needs and desires of the wealthy-elite -- as virtually all governments currently are.

One reason could be because many religious people believe that it would be one of the "signs of the times" that the apocolypse is upon us.
Some already believe that the EU is the forerunner to that. (even though it is just currency... currently)

who wants to be controlled by a government with foreign leaders who do not share my same culture and values? do you trust a world government run by Muslims who want to Islamicize the world? I don't even trust my government run by my own elected officials.
