Very broad question.
Carbon is the element that forms the back bone of all the major chemicals that we are made from.
These include carbohydrates, protein, fats and nucleic acids.
Hydrogen and oxygen are attached to the carbon chain back bone in the above substances.
Nitrogen is found in protein and nucleic acids.(DNA is the most famous of these acids.)
The arrangements of the attached atoms in the carbon chain give them their properties (behaviours). Eg if they dissolve in water, react to form new substances etc.

There are lots of very large books written about the functions of these four elements, since they are four of the basic elements of life on Earth.
