He's done nothing but underachieve. Remember they extended it before they knocked off WVU. The only thing he's ever done successfully his entire career is ride Jimmy Johnson's coat tails.

Before they extended Wann's contract I was wondering if he is going to get fired. When he got a contract extension that to me made no sense. I don't think anyone knows, not even Pitt fans, why that contract was extended. He has had three losing seasons in a row. He took over a program that won the Big East, and promptly started losing. If they later decide to fire him that means they will have to pay him the remainder of the contract. Maybe that's why Dave took over the Pitt Program, he wanted to coach a program that was even dumber than he is. Remember when the Dolphins fired him, Wayne the Fins owner, would have had to pay him several million dollars to do nothing but vacation, or do whatever he wanted. Dave takes the Pitt job, so Wayne didn't have to pay him. If it was me, I would give him one more year to prove himself and that's it. Definitely a contract extension is a big mistake.

You need to give a coach at least 5 years or so to tell how well he's doing. He needs time to get all of his recruits on the field. Look at Florida....Ron Zook put alot of great talent on the field, and the year after he was sacked, Urban Meyer swept in and won a championship with them. Another possibility could be that Pitt isn't a top-tier football school. Yes, they've had great players there in the past, but have you ever put Pitt in the same category as Oklahoma, Georgia, Michigan, etc.? I think ANY coach that takes the Pitt job is fighting an uphill battle, because they're so close to Ohio St. and Penn St.

Ok, guess I am a dumba$s. I wrote an entire answer based on them extending him after the WVU win. Now you point out that you already stated it was before the WVU win...my bad.

I will accept my mistake.

Now to answer your question knowing they extended him before the WVU win.....well, there is no answer for that. What sense does that make?

Beating WVU isn't exactly underachieving...Since they did, it kind of makes the argument WHY DID THEY obvious...Actually, he rode Mike Ditka's coat tails because he replaced Ditka with the Bears...

They're stupid. The only thing Wannstedt is good at is losing, and getting fired.
