The chemical reactions in the body relating to metabolism, such as enzyme reactions, respiration, muscle function, kidney filtration etc etc etc, require energy to work properly. They get this by us ingesting food, oxidising it with acid in our intestine, thereby giving a sudden boost in energy. This is cascaded down various energy releasing chains, such as the Krebs Cycle, Electron Transport Cycle etc, and released where it is needed. This is all part of the body conforming to the second law of thermodynamics, energy moves from higher (produced by digestion) to lower states. As it does so it is used in metabolic pathways of the body.
