You maintain credibility by proof of your actions. Do what you say you're going to do, don't lie, don't claim more skill or knowledge than you actually have, admit when you're wrong, and don't make excuses for yourself.
Correllary to #2, don't ever, ever ever think you can BS through a situation or worse yet, start believing your own BS!

Honesty, simple. If everyone you contact knows you'll never do them wrong, you're in. It's also called integrity.

it's not easy, but i do so by being frank and honest with people as much as is possible.
